Why you should look after the tension of your hair cutting scissors

When we talk about the tension of your hair cutting scissors, we mean how tight the screw of the scissors you use to carry out your hairdressing work is. In addition to mastering different haircuts, you should know how to search and check the tension of your everyday hair cutting scissors, and make it be the best possible, which will make this tool keep its features feel as good as new.

Misuse of tools and in this case, scissors, can make them to deform and the screw to loosen, which will affect the cutting ability and the hand will not adapt as it did at the beginning. So, it is usual that the results are not as expected. A good calibration of the screw will return the cutting force to the hair cutting scissors and will benefit a better movement of the wrist.

To keep your hair cutting scissors in the best possible condition, it is important to know that the tension system is what provides the control and tension of the scissors blades while cutting and thinning hair.

Therefore, the screw is the fundamental piece of gearing, and it is used to adjust the tension between the blades as they loosen over time. The tension of the hair cutting scissors is really important because there is a spring force to maintain contact between the edges of the blades as they cut, which is why the blades are screwed together. A loose screw removes this spring force and when the scissors are used without spring force, the locks of hair, when they have to be cut, they are not cut, they are bent.

Which and how many screws are there?

When we talk about professional hairdressing hair cutting scissors, we have to talk about three kinds of screws: regular screws, butterfly screws and UFO or Pivot screws. Let's know more about each of them:

Regular screws:

This type of screws is the most common for hairdressing scissors. However, not because they are the most common, they are the easiest type of screw to tighten, and they can be difficult to tighten and loosen, which makes it difficult to correctly tension the scissor blades. They usually have a slotted head so that flat-edged tools can be used with them.

Thumbscrews:

When you get your hands on a pair of hair cutting scissors with such a screw, you should know that they have a built-in screwdriver for handling.

They are usually the easiest to tighten and loosen, but you should always be careful depending on the pressure you exert when tightening because the tension characteristics of the blades can change and, therefore, when using them for a cut, the results of the cut may vary.

These types of screws do not usually have a great reputation among hairdressers who manufacture high quality or premium professional scissors because they tend to protrude from the shape of the scissors, precisely because of their butterfly shape, which makes it difficult to manipulate this tool in some cuts.

UFO screws

These screws are known as pivot screws or tamper-proof screws. They are screws with modern designs that are different from the previous ones, perhaps one of their characteristics to highlight is that, as they do not protrude from the design of the hair cutting scissors, the hair does not get trapped in it while the cut is being manipulated.  This may be an advantage, but they are not easily manipulated, which means that not one person can handle their tension, only a scissor specialist can change that factor.
